What to do when shooting in bad lighting and its for a charity? Forget about it and start clicking…
Recently I was asked fill at the last minute for a photographer at the Kentucky Derby celebrations for a local charity. My brief was to turn up and shoot the ladies in their hats.

Mixed uneven lighting makes for an interesting image
As you maybe aware the Kentucky Derby is famous for Ladies to dress up in their finery for the derby. But it is the Hats (and Horses) that steal the show. The lighting was bright midday sunshine and indoors was very mixed lighting.
This all took place at a Winery and fun was had by all except me initially.
At first I was worried about everything but then soon realized I was there to shoot the festivities and I was a volunteer. I wasn’t going to be fired! And besides I love run and gun shooting so we all had fun!
So with the mixed lighting I made it part of the image look and feel
Sometimes its better to document the subject at hand… in this case a festive atmosphere of Southern Belles young and old
Even as day turns into night it is still an interesting time to shoot party people
And when you have a Horse race you must have horsemen with HATS!
So the moral of this story is just shoot and have fun and let the images speak for themselves.
