Gold in them thar hills

It’s 7:50 am… the sun is rising over Camp Raven Knob deep in the hills of Surry County. The frost lies heavy on the ground; the Rhododendrons stand limp in the 23-degree (-5C) shade. Campfires are stoked and voices echo through the valley as sleepy boys prepare breakfast before starting the annual Klondike Derby.

The cold and mixed lighting is always a challenge for photographer and camera but luckily today it will warm up to a balmy 50 degrees (10C) and checking the histogram should make for a nice day out with the boys. Of course it never fails to amuse me how these boys can tolerate the cold and maintain their energy and excitement.

Today is one of those days that come along to break up the dreary bleakness of winter. A welcome sunny day that ends up warming the soul and bringing smiles to all.
