Aussie part-2 “Fluffy Bums”

Posted in Photography with tags on March 25, 2011 by Paul Tombleson

Falafel rap with baba ghanoush, potato and coriander, humus and tabouli washed down with fresh lemon juice… that’s an Abduls Middle Eastern lunch delight!

Then it’s a ride down memory lane… or in this case, past the Opera House over the Harbor Bridge, across the Spit Bridge and on into Manly for a sweet meet up with Janette and let the Aussie UV rays attack my lily white American winter induced body on the balcony. Of course this body needs more than UV rays to set it right but it’s a start…LOL. The sound of the water lapping on the foreshore… the cockatoos screeching overhead… the low thudding of the Sydney to Manly ferries passing by while being served a plate of fresh fruit with Greek super smooth yogurt infused with passion fruit is enough to make one believe all is well with the world. Excuse me while I yawn and roll over in my lounge chair… and you want me to write a blog? Give me a break… oh that’s right I’m on a break!

Ok… here we go again. So like I was saying, the Sun, Surf and food of Sydney are just as I remember it (except more expensive now). This blog report will be about fluffy little friends as they are all around me here, and lets face it, who doesn’t love cute critters?

Bringing "Money" to the table

First off “Money” as in the cat called “Money”… who is as cool as a cucumber until he is hungry then it is time for you (humans) to get off your fat chuffs and serve me. Money rules Manly and loves to bring home all kinds of recently dead friends to show off, if you get my drift. With friends like this who cares about enemies!

A poor little possum lost his mum so relatives took this little guy in and are raising him to be an upstanding member of a four-legged society. As nocturnal critters daylight is not natural for

him so he likes to bury his head in your hand when you hold him. But if you bring some berries to the party he will sit very happy munching on them like a sea otter. The word “cute” does not do justice to this little fluffy guy.

Not only did Brad and Liz move to Aussie but so did the pets in the family. Currently “Titus” the boxer and “Tina”… I have issues… the cat is in quarantine out west in Eastern Creek. I tagged along for a visit to the incarcerated pair. Tina

was first up and looked very healthy having put on a kilo. She had a reputation as an escape artist and has since settled down to become a model prisoner pre-purring to keep to her self. Titus on the other hand is ready to party with any and all. On approaching his kennel (cell) Brad

whistled and up leaped Titus from his slumber and I captured the moment from afar. Once he confirmed it was daddy come to visit he was bouncing off the walls. What a sweet boy he is… all slobber and love and wouldn’t hurt anyone. One more week and out of jail they come! Look out Sydney your fire hydrants will never be the same…

Starting off for Downunder 2011

Posted in Photography with tags on March 21, 2011 by Paul Tombleson

Arrived on Friday 18th in Aussie. It was a twenty seven hour start to finish flight (Charlotte-LAX-Auckland-Sydney). The flying process was very smooth. No “Junk” check in Charlotte or LAX but the same BS regarding taking off shoes, belt, jacket and cell phone. Along with removing computer for separate inspection.

While the flight info say “Only one bag at 23 kgs” I had two and as far as I can see I was not charged for the extra one. I still have to fly back so who knows?
Flight from Charlotte was full and the normal cattle drive rules apply. Keep your elbows in… remind your neighbor that he has his own headphone jack and the kid sitting behind is allowed 3 free kicks to the back of my seat before offering ADD drugs to the little s**t or the oblivious parents.
As my bags were checked all the way to Sydney it was a short walk at LAX to terminal 2 from terminal 1 and a painless and pleasant book in at the Air New Zealand ticket counter for my next two boarding passes. I don’t know if it was the funny Kiwi accent, the giggle and a “she’ll be right” to one of my questions about my bags, but I could sense the uptight nature of travel in the US starting to ease. I said that to the girl serving me and she smiled and said… “you still have security to go through, but I hear the mob are behaving today so lets hope it holds for you” followed by a LOL. She was right, the natives seemed calm and through I went, undressing and dressing with complete strangers again.
Boarding the plane you could smell it was new. A pristine aircraft waiting to haul my sorry ass to Auckland. And the flight was not full. I could sense this was going to be OK. I got my seat and the one next to me ready for a relaxing trip (I had deliberately booked at the rear of the aircraft were there are only 2 seats knowing they would be the last booked). Of course I hadn’t counted on the family of three (one of them a baby) getting the row of three in front of me. My stare at the baby and subsequent look of dismay must have caught the flight attendant’s compassion because when I turned to the aisle (with the same look I guess) the flight attendant was looking at me… she nodded to me and stepped in. “you know”… she said to the couple…”this is not a full flight, why don’t I seat you in the middle where you will have room to stretch out”. The middle it turned out was five row up! YES! Don’t get me wrong… I love babies… but, I love them when I’m awake, not when I trying to sleep…
I thanked the flight attendant later when she was serving drinks… she brushed it aside with a smile and the quip… “that’s what they call a win, win… can I get you a drink sir?” No need now I said…

Great Barrier Island NZ @ sunrise (iphone4)

The flight was uneventful apart from me playing with a the high tech entertainment interface in front of me and the 2 hours of watching a full moon at the end in the wing tip as if suspended there. Of course turbulence and clouds took care of that illusion.

We landed in Auckland just after sunrise with the “magic hour light” introduced me to the Great Barrier Island, Coromandel peninsular, Waiheke and surrounding islands on the Waitamata harbor, Auckland skyline and on into the airport. Just a one hour wait then on the Sydney (cattle drive rules in effect again). As I was at the front of the plane this time I was ahead of the herd and even had time to squeeze my lemon and still make it to immigration before the rest. Straight through immigration I go

Tasman Sea (heading for Aussie) iphone4

with my kiwi passport privilege and arrive at the luggage carousel just as it starts moving and off come my bags first. Customs wave me through and the double sliding doors part magically to freedom. Pushing the luggage trolly I see two familiar faces moving toward me. A curly headed one and one tall dark and handsome wearing a “Pearlphotography” tee shirt. Brad and Liz whisk me off to Abdul’s on Elizabeth street for an old favorite Sydney lunch… It’s warm, it’s family, it’s done!… Let the adventure begin! Gold in them thar hills

It’s 7:50 am… the sun is rising over Camp Raven Knob deep in the hills of Surry County. The frost lies heavy on the ground; the Rhododendrons stand limp in the 23-degree (-5C) shade. Campfires are stoked and voices echo through the valley as sleepy boys prepare breakfast before starting the annual Klondike Derby.

The cold and mixed lighting is always a challenge for photographer and camera but luckily today it will warm up to a balmy 50 degrees (10C) and checking the histogram should make for a nice day out with the boys. Of course it never fails to amuse me how these boys can tolerate the cold and maintain their energy and excitement.

Today is one of those days that come along to break up the dreary bleakness of winter. A welcome sunny day that ends up warming the soul and bringing smiles to all.

White Christmas 2010

Bing Crosby would be singing his heart out this Christmas as the East Coast was dusted white. Here in North Carolina we got 5-6 inches (12-15cm) making for a picture post card day. Continue reading

Calendar Gift Idea

Well it’s that time of the year again… Christmas time! Yes, I know here in North America we have groups that want to ban the term “Merry Christmas” and have “Happy Holiday” instead. But, I’m an Independent traditionalist who grew up where Christmas is/was a time for the coming together of Family… giving gifts… and giving thanks for another year while eating Christmas dinner on the beach and yes there was in the background the Christian element of celebrating the birth of Jesus. So folks I declare loudly MERRY CHRISTMAS ya’ll.
